  • Lie down in your side. Maintain your posture and keep your legs stacked on top of each other.
  • Now, lock your knee joint by the contraction of the quadriceps muscle.
  • Now, lift your leg gradually. Make sure to keep the contraction constant and the leg straight.
  • Keep this position for 2 to 3 seconds, and make sure to keep your posture straight.
  • Now bring your leg back to starting position while keeping the contraction constant.
  • Switch sides and perform the same exercise with the other leg.
  • Perform 5 sets with 7 to 10 reps on both sides.

Standing Hamstring Stretch

The Hamstrings comprise a set of 3 different muscles. They start from the hip till the back of the knee. Due to any reason, if they become stiff and tight, it can cause overuse of surrounding muscles. It can easily cause irritation and inflammation in the hip bursae. To perform this exercise:

  • Keep one foot on a heightened surface. The elevated the surface is, the better it is for stretch.
  • Now, contract quadriceps muscles which will straighten your knee.
  • Lean forward to stretch your Hamstrings while ensuring that your knee should be straight throughout the stretch.
  • Keep this position for almost 20 to 30 seconds, then move back to starting position.
  • Now repeat using the other leg. Perform 3 to 5 reps on both sides.

Trochanteric Bursitis Physical TherapyClamshell

When the gluteus medius and external rotator of a hip joint become weak, the chances of misalignment of the femur increase. They strain the hip, leading to irritation and inflammation of underlying bursae.
Clamshells help in strengthening and stabilizing these muscles. To perform this exercise:

  • Lie down on your side and keep your knees bent. Make sure to stack your knees, ankles, and hips on top of each other.
  • Gradually, raise your top knee while keeping your ankles together. Do not roll your body forward or backward.
  • Keep this position for 2 to 3 seconds, then lower to starting position.
  • Perform 5 sets with 7 to 10 reps on each side.

Piriformis Stretch

Under the glutes, piriformis muscles are present. These muscles help to rotate your hips externally. Due to tightness in this muscle, mobility of the hips is affected. It causes irritation and inflammation to surrounding muscles and bursae. To perform this exercise:

  • Lie down on your back. Keep your feet flat on the ground and bend your knees.
  • Raise one foot and place it on the thigh of the other leg. Try to keep your knee away from your body.
  • Maintain this position for 20 to 30 seconds and return to starting position.
  • Perform 3 reps of this exercise on both sides.

Prevention

Trochanteric Bursitis can be easily prevented by following ways:

  • Exercise appropriately in the proper manner.
  • Use suitable inserts and orthotics.
  • Lose weight
  • Maintaining physical fitness
  • Avoiding over-exertion
